US: Recognizing Somaliland would be a simple acknowledgement of the truth that the territory is an independent state

Recognizing Somaliland would let the U.S. build a partnership with the ter- ritory that would give Washington a hedge against further deterioration of its position in Djibouti.

De Facto Independence. Somaliland charted a different course. Follow-ing a conference of traditional leaders, in May 1991 the territory re-declared independence and began operating as an autonomous state.

Recognition Benefits for the U.S.
Recognizing Somaliland would be a simple acknowledgement of the truth that the territory is an independent state in all but a technical sense—and would allow Washington to create a more effective reality-based policy forthe region.
