Subject: Urgent Need to Uphold Parliamentary Privilege and Immunity
Dear Hon. Mr. Speaker,
I write with deep concern about the blatant and persistent disregard for
Parliamentary Privileges and Immunities by the executive branches and certain Members of Parliament. This is unacceptable given what is at stake and the importance of the Somalia’s House of People to the political stability of the country. These privileges, enshrined in the Draft Constitution and Parliamentary Procedures of the Federal Republic of Somalia, are
fundamental to our democracy, and critical for a full functioning government which Somalia direly needs and misses.
To our international partners and Western diplomats, Somalia is witnessing the destruction of one of its key institutions, which has been pivotal in paving.
The way for the country’s political stability. What we are seeing are new attempts to erode the basic elements of Somalia’s democratic development, and its long journey toward ending dictatorship.
