Statement on the Peace Agreement between the Government Of The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia And The Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF)

Hargeisa, Somaliland November 6, 2022 – On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Somaliland we welcome the agreed-upon ceasefire between the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF), we see this as an essential step to ending the almost two-year war that has seen much displacement and death on both sides.

As our neighbor and brotherly country, we have supported the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia’s move to open dialogue with the Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF) and the final announcement of the AU-led peace talks in South Africa.  We always believed that peace would prevail, and this ceasefire is something for both parties to start building on to have long-lasting peace in the region.

We commend the African Union on their diligent efforts to bring both parties to the table for peace talks to happen and for the former Nigerian President H.E. Olusegun Obasanjo for meditating. This first step needs to be further fortified with a plan to resolve the current humanitarian crisis that has resulted from the hostilities, and the government of the Republic of Somaliland is ready to assist.

The Republic of Somaliland looks forward to the establishment of a working relationship between the two parties for the future of the region’s peace, security, and development.
