President Bihi, who is sitting next to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, made it clear at an event held together in Addis Ababa.

The MoU will enable Ethiopia to access the Red Sea from Somaliland to use as a military base and for commercial purposes for 50 years, He said at a briefing on Monday in the capital Addis Ababa. It will be able to lease a “20 kilometer (12 miles) long access for the Ethiopian Navy base and to be used as one of its entry ports,” Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi said at the same event

Mr Behi explaining the matter as something that contributed to its recognition. “We have sought for Somaliland to become a recognized state and one of the countries in the Horn of Africa,” he says.

“When the actual agreement was signed, Ethiopia became the first country to recognize Somaliland, but he noted that the port given to Ethiopia in Zeila and the use of the 20 km of Red Sea leased from Ethiopia did not rule out the use of Berbera Port.” In the past, Ethiopia used to pass through the goods going to its country.

The agreement also includes that Somaliland has been given a share in Ethiopian Airlines.
