Hargeisa(ANN)-The commemoration of the 18th of May, the 31st anniversary of the Republic of Somaliland, was widely celebrated in the country on Wednesday, May 18, 2022
May 18 This year’s event was a huge celebration of the country, following the reaffirmation of the people of Somaliland on May 18, 1991 in Burao, the capital of the Togdheer region.
The event marked the day the people of Somaliland reaffirmed their independence from the United Kingdom on June 26, 1960, following a period of misery, genocide, looting and humiliation five days later Union of Somalia July 1, 1960.
However, the people of Somaliland fought a brutal war against Mohamed Siad Barre’s military rule, which was eventually overthrown, so May 18th is extremely important to them.
The President of the Republic of Somaliland, Muse Bihi Abdi, attended the 31st anniversary celebrations on Wednesday, May 18, with the Speakers of the two Houses, the Chief Justice, members of Parliament, members of both Houses of Parliament, members of the Council of Ministers, and various delegations from neighboring countries, including Djibouti and Ethiopia, as the fifth Somali Regional State of Ethiopia based in Jigjiga, and diplomats from countries with offices in Somaliland.

The President of the Republic of Somaliland, Muse Bihi Abdi, addressed the nation on the occasion of May 18th and the importance of the statehood of the Republic of Somaliland.
President Bihi first congratulated the Somaliland community wherever they are on the occasion of the 18th of May, and spoke in depth about the reasons why Somaliland has decided to reconsider its destiny and regain its independence and sovereignty.
Mr. Bihi said that the government of Somaliland came from the will of the people, and they decided to build a full nation and become part of the democratic governments in the world.
He urged the youth of Somaliland to take advantage of their time, build their country, use their knowledge to benefit their country and their people, and take responsibility for their own land. would leave.
The union became unpopular with the people of Somaliland, and the military government of the Somali Revolutionary Government 21 Oct, 1969, led by Mohamed Siad Barre perpetrated massacres, robberies, and atrocities against the people of Somaliland, which ended in a bloody struggle. It falls on May 18, 1993, after the Burao conference, the capital of the Togdheer region, confirmed a public decision that Somaliland had regained its sovereignty and was not part of Somalia.
Somaliland’s vibrant and well-functioning democratic system of governance, which has taken root in the country over the past three decades, derives its highest authority and legal force solely from the Constitution of the Somaliland Republic, which alone reflects the democratic will and self-determination of the Somaliland people.
Before twenty years ago, Somaliland has established constitutional institutions and adopted a party-based system of free elections.
A constitutional referendum was held in Somaliland on 31 May 2001. The referendum was held on a draft constitution that affirmed Somaliland’s independence from Somalia. 99.9% of eligible voters took part in the referendum and 97.1% of them voted in favour of the constitution.
Somaliland has established stability and elections to take over power, with the support of the rest of the world building the democratic process, except a few friends who have contributed little to the democratic process in Somaliland.
Three Presidents have taken over the reins of democracy in the Republic of Somaliland, with the people directly voting in free and fair elections as witnessed by international observers from leading institutes and journalists from around the world.
The Competition for Organizations and Parties has been held twice to gain the trust of the people, as well as three local councils and two directly elected Houses of Representatives. At this time, Somaliland is preparing for presidential elections on November 13, 2022, and contesting elections for national political associations and parties.
The stability and development that Somaliland has achieved in the last three decades has greatly attracted the attention of the world of Somaliland, although the Republic of Somaliland became a country despite a great effort. It has yet to gain international recognition, but is a good example of democracy, security, and stability in the region and in other parts of the world.
But the lack of recognition did not deviate from its path of statehood, and it established contacts with several friends in the region and internationally, and the stability in Somaliland, its security, and its democratic system, led it to enter into major investment agreements with large companies seeking to take advantage of the strategic importance of Somaliland’s site to the world, which has resulted in the UAE-based DP World investing $ 442 million at the strategic port of Berbera.
