Hamza visit has derailed the Somaliland government’s peace plan

Las Anod (ANN)-The Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia,  Hamza Abdi Barre, arrived today in the city of Las Anod, the administrative capital of the SSC-Khaatumo region, While a previous delegation had arrived yesterday to lay the groundwork for his visit.

Their visit posed a serious security threat and the possibility of a resurgence of the conflicts that have existed in LasAnod for the past year.

Although the federal government explained that the move was historic and aimed at strengthening national unity and enhancing the presence of government in the region, it was explained that this was not the case and that it was leading to political chaos and reigniting the conflict.

Upon landing at Las Anod airport, Prime Minister Hamza and his delegation were welcomed by federal government officials, the leadership of SSC-Khatumo, troops deployed from Mogadishu, some of whom had come earlier, military officers from the Federal Government of Somalia, and a specially selected people.

 

The Prime Minister Hamza expressed deep gratitude for the warm hospitality and honor extended to him and his delegation. He described the welcome as a powerful symbol of Somali unity and resilience, emphasizing that the people of Las Anod embody the spirit of patriotism and commitment to defending Somalia’s sovereignty.

Meanwhile, the security situation was very alarming, with the SSC-Khatumo administration issuing a statement expressing its security concerns, saying last night that no weapons could be seen in the city, including armored vehicles and light weapons.


The House of Representatives of the Republic of Somaliland held a closed-door meeting this morning at their headquarters in Hargeisa, and issued a statement condemning the visit of the Somali Prime Minister.

In their statement, they said that the Somaliland government needed to cancel the plan to open peace talks.

The Somaliland government has already warned against the prime minister’s visit to Las Anod, although there is no clear political or military plan to address it.

The visits restart a parked a major conflict, and it came at a time when the Somaliland government was disarming civilian forces in the eastern Somaliland region, with the government of President Abdirahman Irro claiming to have a peace plan to end the conflict, but the visit of the Federal Government Prime Minister to Las Anod a clearly demonstrated the renewal of the conflict in the region.
