The first phase of UNSOM a new name – United Nations Assistance Transition Mission in Somalia (UNATMIS or UNTRASOM) and a new mandate

Mogdishu Somalia, (ANN)-The government of Somalia requested the presence and support of the United Nations in UNSOM, which was previously scheduled to last until November 2024, so it is important to extend the period until 2026.
The demand letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, shows that his government does not have the power and energy to take over hand the responsibility of the United Nations Special Envoy Representative of the Secretary-General Ambassador James Swan.
Ambassador Swan, who is the person who really sets the administrative policy in Somalia, he and his team. Also James Swan he is the to order command of the security forces of Villa Somalia.
On the other hand, receiving in his office the diplomats who come from forein to Mogadishu on behalf of foreign countries, and the heads of the aid agencies, all under Swan’s SRSC office.
The letters of President Hassan Sheikh’s government demanding that it continue to govern the United Nations said,”In the light of Somalia’s steady progress towards governance and greater stability, the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) proposes a two-year Transition of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) to a United Nations Country Team (UNCT) to better align with Somalia’s national priorities and its evolving needs.”
The transition period is said to be 2026, The transition will involve a phased handover of responsibilities to Somali institutions and the UN Country Team over a two year period, a reduction in UNSOM personnel and budget, and a focus on capacity-building within Somali institutions.
The detailed transition plan will be developed in consultation with the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and will be implemented over two years, starting in Nobvember 2024. By October 2026 whcih is the end date of the transition, all functions currently managed by UNSOM will be fully absorbed by the FGS and UNCT.
