Paris(ANN)-Prof. Mohamed Abdi Ghandi, a member of the group that drafted the 4.5 system of power-sharing for Somalis at the Arta Conference in Djibouti in 2000, died in Paris, France yesterday, at age 72

Ghandi, was a geologist, psychologist and historian. Professor Gandhi wore many hats during his lifetime.

According, as reported by the Horn of Africa, to his relatives, Mohamed Abdi Ghandi who has been illing recent week has died in a hospital but the cause of his death was specified. He had planned to run for the presidency in Somalia, but died.

Prof. Mohamed Abdi Ghandi He was the chairman of the technical committee that was responsible for drawing the roadmap for the Arte talks in Djibouti in the year 2000 that brought forth the first formal government in Somalia since the collapse of the central government in 1991.

Gandhi was appointed Somalia’s defence Minister in 2009 during the reign of Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Sharmarke and President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed. His tenure as minister ended in 2010.

On the other hand, Ghandi was also part of the group that led the SACB’, (Executive Committee), and Novib Aid Strategic Planning Conference, which was held in Somaliland in 2004, although Somaliland was deeply concerned. Ghandi and his entourage were hiding at the Ambassador Hotel during the conference, which was rejected by members of the Somaliland delegation, who described the plan as “contemptuous”.
