Fosiya Haji Aden’s recent withdrawal from her candidacy for the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission has highlighted intricate political dynamics involving Somalia,
Djibouti, and Somaliland.

Background and Recent Developments:

1. Initial Candidacy and Withdrawal:

Fosiya Haji Aden, a prominent political figure from Somaliland, was initially nominated for the AU Chair Commission by the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS).

However, a week ago, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia rescinded this support. He informed Fosiya that President Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti had urged Somalia to back Djibouti’s candidate, Mr. Mahamed Yousuf, for the
position. Subsequently, Somalia submitted a letter to the AU confirming this change in support.

2. Political and Regional Implications:

The decision by President Mohamud reflects broader regional and political pressures. Both President Guelleh and President Mohamud have historically opposed Somaliland’s quest for independence and its political aspirations.

Fosiya’s candidacy likely became a casualty of these geopolitical tensions. Her association with Somaliland, despite running under Somalia’s nomination, appears to have influenced the decision, suggesting a regional alignment against Somaliland’s interests.

3. Fosiya’s Potential Historical Role:

In light of these developments, there is a call for Fosiya Haji Aden to take a significant step by returning to Somaliland. Her return could symbolize a realignment with her heritage and the aspirations of her people.

Historically, her family has been deeply connected to the cause of Somaliland’s independence. Her father fought for Somaliland’s autonomy 60 years ago, a legacy that remains influential.
