Dubia(ANN)-Ethiopian government is in talks with Somaliland and the United Arab Emirates for the transfer of its shares from Berbera to Zeila port. It is one of the main agenda of the Ethiopian Prime Minister’s visit to the UAE.
The Ethiopian government now appears determined to convert its 19% stake in Berbera Port to investment and development in the historic port of Zeila in western Somaliland.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has been in the United Arab Emirates for the past two days on an unannounced visit, where he met with UAE officials in what the Ethiopian government described as a diplomatic move.
A series of high-profile events in recent weeks have been linked to the possibility of this and related information, including Somaliland President Muse Bihi’s visit to Ethiopia and a recent statement by Somaliland’s Minister of Finance Dr. Sa’ad Ali Shire.

The Ethiopian government’s stake in the Berbera port has changed, according to a report published by MyViewsOnNews. Sa’ad Ali Shire recently stated that Ethiopia’s investment in the port of Berbera is unaccounted for, and clarified that the port of Berbera is currently owned by the United Arab Emirates and Somaliland, with Somaliland accounting for 35 percent and DP World for 65 percent, indicating that Ethiopia’s 19 percent share has been vanished.
According to the report, the Ethiopian government intends to transfer its stake in Berbera port to Zeila port, citing, “The First, Zeila Port, is close to Ethiopia. “Secondly, a large amount of natural gas reserves have been found in the Somali region of Ethiopia,” the report said.
The British New Age and the Chinese Company GCL, which is exploring for natural gas in Ethiopia’s Somali region, wanted to use the Zeila gas pipeline, according to the report.
“Ethiopia now wants to export this natural gas to the port of Zeila in Somaliland, from the Somali region, with the help of China and financial support.”said the report.

Somaliland lies on the southern coast of the Gulf of Aden. It is bordered by Djibouti to the northwest, Ethiopia to the south and west, and Somalia to the east. Somaliland’s location is very strategic as tens of thousands of commercial ships pass through the Gulf of Aden annually.
