London(ANN)-British police say it has arrested a man after his car mounted the pavement in front of a museum in central London, injuring several people.
Witnesses said a car “drove into people” near the city’s Natural History Museum in the South Kensington area on Saturday afternoon.
Police confirmed a number of people are injured, but did not release any statement on the number or severity of the injuries. It said more details would be released later.
It described the incident as a collision, but added that “inquiries to establish the circumstances and motive are under way.”
Security forces also evacuated nearby museums and closed roads in the area.
Several pictures have been released showing security forces holding down a black man in front of people as he is covered in blood.
The incident follows a a series of terror attacks in London and Manchester this year, which prompted authorities to set the terrorist threat level at “severe,” indicating an attack is highly likely.
The attacks included vehicle attacks on pedestrians at Westminster Bridge and London Bridge in June and March, which left several people dead or injured
