AU Expresses Strong Concern over Somalia

“The AU and the UN, in consultation with FGS, and international donors, call for the immediate completion of a joint report on the situation in Somalia for submission to the Security Council.” the AU said in a statement.

Addis Ababa (ANN) – The African Union (AU) has expressed grave concern over the situation in Somalia, saying that Somalia is on the verge to be going a dark state. The African Union (AU) has expressed concern over al-Shabaab’s return, calling it a “worrying recovery”, so it is important to note that the situation in Somalia has deteriorated. “Now is the time to strengthen the AMISOM mission in Somalia, in collaboration with the United Nations,” the AU said in a statement. “The AU and the UN, in consultation with FGS and international donors, request the immediate completion of a joint report on the strategic objectives, obligations, scope and inclusion of the AU-UN Multidimensional Stabilization Mission in Somalia, as called for in UN Security Council Resolution 2568 (2021), to be submitted to the PSC and the United Nations Security Council by the end of 2021; ” said the AU statement. The statement also emphasized that the joint report should address all support mechanisms for the next mission and FGS, including the reorganization of the political support and logistics provided by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), in Somalia (UNSOM) and the United Nations Support Office for Somalia (UNSOS).   This was stated in the communique of the 1037th PSC meeting held on 7 October 2021, on the situation in Somalia and the progress of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) Independent Assessment Report consultations.
