Somaliland: Sentenced 1-year in jail Horn Cable TV Editor


Hargeisa(ANN)-Somaliland has sentenced A Court in Hargeisa, Horn Cable TV editor, Abdikadir Saleban Asayr (aka Abduqadir Oda’ay) to 1 year in jail and a fine of 3 million Somaliland Shilling (US$300) for propaganda against the administration.


The Journalist who was arrested on November last year for running a story dubbed by the court as “propaganda” against Egal international airport.

Media advocacy groups have strongly opposed what they termed as an unfair sentence of the TV Journalist.

A statement by Somali Journalist Syndicate (SJS) calls for Somaliland authorities to immediately free Editor.

Authorities in Hargeisa have previously arrested Journalists for covering anti-government protests. Abdikadir Saleban Asayr arrested November in last year.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) Somalia is among the dangerous environments for Journalists to operate.
