Addis Ababa(ANN)-The African Union (AU) has welcomed the release of a number of political prisoners in Ethiopia.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has welcomed the release of individuals opposed to the policies of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, who were arrested years ago, and released by the Ethiopian Federal Government.

The Chairperson welcomes this important gesture of appeasement of the political situation in Ethiopia. He sincerely hopes that it will be the trigger for a political process, paving the way for the implementation of a genuinely inclusive National Dialogue process for the peaceful and consensual solution to the political and institutional problems facing the Federation.

The Chairperson further encourages all the actors to engage in it with courage and determination while assuring them, to this end, of the resolute support of the African Union. Said the statement.

On the other hand, The Government Communications Office has detailed the government’s decision to release prisoners in various ways.

“In order to achieve full unity and develop the country at the expense of the government,” the statement said yesterday.

The government has also said that the decision to release the detainees is part of a process to pave the way for national dialogue aimed at creating a better political platform.

The Ministry of Justice, for its part, said the accused in the case file of Jawar Mohamed and Iskindir Negga should be dropped so that the forthcoming national dialogue in the country could be participatory and fruitful.
