The Former President Muse Bihi Abdi recently revealed that some close associates are urging him to pursue a third term in office, despite the explicit prohibition against such an attempt by the Kulmiye Constitution. This resurgence of unnterest in a potential third term seems to have sparked a fresh sense of ambition within Mr. Bihi, suggesting that certain friends may be behind this push for a political comeback.
This strategic move poses a serious threat to the internal cohesion of the Kulmiye Party, Although the party has not recovered from the great destruction and defeat it suffered in the last election on 13 November 2024 and also in the previous election in 2023.
If that a possible, or potentially it seems fracturing its a longstanding unity of the Party.
An increasing number of younger party members and supporters, who have spent years observing the same leadership dynamics, are growing restless and assertive in their desire to assume command. They find themselves disillusioned by the traditional leaders who have maintained a firm grip on Somaliland politics for over two decades, often resisting the winds of change.
During his tenure, President Bihi has made significant achievements in governance, infrastructure development, and regional stability, while at the same time facing the challenges that have turned into a conflict that has paralyzed Somaliland in the Sool region, especially in the city of Lascaanod, where there is an unresolved conflict that has crippled the economy, stability, and unity of Somaliland.
The Mou agreement signed with Ethiopia has become a major international event in Somaliland, although the fate of Mou is unknown. However, the defeat of the Kulmiye presidential election, which was a party that had ruled the country for 14 consecutive years, was widely attributed to the conflict in the Sool region and the way it was managed by the Kulmiye government, which led to political storms seeking change and the defeat in the presidential election on 13 Nov 2024.
Therefore former prisident, it is imperative for him to act judiciously and strategically. By prioritizing the cohesion of the Kulmiye Party and implementing astrong strategic planning process, he can further solidify his legacy and enhance the party’s prospects for success in the upcoming 2029 elections.
Key initiatives could include strengthening grassroots engagement, fostering collaboration among party members, and ensuring that diverse voices are heard within the political discourse. Additionally, addressing pressing issues such as youth unemployment, economic diversification, and social cohesion will be critical for the party’s appeal to the electorate.
This proactive approach not only positions the Kulmiye Party favorably for future electoral contests but also paves the way for a more inclusive and sustainable political future in Somaliland, one that reflects the aspirations of all its citizens.
