The impact of Ankara communiqué between Ethiopia and Somalia

The recent communiqué between Ethiopia and Somalia, signed during their meeting in Ankara, Turkey, has raised serious concerns for Somaliland’s sovereignty and national interests. This communiqué, reportedly involving potential agreements on access to the Red Sea, attempts to overlook Somaliland’s statehood and its legitimate government. The meeting between Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud demonstrates a worrying trend of Somalia claiming jurisdiction over Somaliland, despite Somaliland’s independent governance since 1991.

The gravity of this issue, the newly elected president , must take the following actions to protect and clarify Somaliland’s position:

  1. Condemn Somalia’s Overreach and Reaffirm Sovereignty
  • Clearly and firmly state that Villa Somalia (the Somali government) has no legal jurisdiction or authority over Somaliland.
