Somaliland’s foreign policy has recently shown significant weaknesses.

Somaliland’s foreign policy has recently faced criticism due to its apparent weaknesses and a concerning lack of strategic clarity. This issue is especially evident in its attempts to secure international recognition, which is crucial for establishing our legitimacy as a sovereign state. Additionally, the policy has struggled to effectively address the ongoing challenges posed by adversarial forces, particularly the government of Somalia based in Villa Somalia. This governmental body has repeatedly undermined our quest for statehood, engaging in aggressive rhetoric and actions that threaten our stability. Such tactics not only jeopardize our sovereignty but also hinder our aspirations for economic growth and societal progress. The ongoing struggle to assert our identity and secure our place in the international community creates an atmosphere of uncertainty that stymies our development efforts and limits our potential in the international arena.

There is an urgent need for a more strategic and cohesive foreign policy approach to enhance our standing in the international community and ensure strong protection of our national interests. We must prioritize the development of seasoned diplomatic personnel who can effectively engage with global counterparts.

Furthermore, it is particularly troubling that our president has remained silent in the face of Villa-Somalia’s repeated provocations. By disregarding our statehood and the recognition we have achieved in the international arena, Villa-Somalia not only undermines our sovereignty but also challenges our presence on the world stage. A decisive and articulate response from our leadership is essential to reaffirm our commitment to defending our national dignity and interests in the face of such disrespect.

The ministry must implement decisive actions to engage in lobbying efforts, utilizing the expertise of our think tank groups based in the United States and the United Kingdom. We should also consider enlisting an experienced international lawyer who specializes in matters of statehood and self-determination. This legal expert would be instrumental in formulating and presenting a comprehensive strategy that articulates our platform for independence and statehood, ensuring that our rights are recognized and upheld on an international stage. By encouraging these connections and leveraging legal expertise, we can enhance our efforts to gain support for our cause and drive our agenda forward..

The legal and historical arguments supporting Somaliland’s claim to independence are deeply rooted and nuanced. Somaliland contends that it functioned as a recognized sovereign entity prior to its voluntary union with Somalia in 1960. This union, however, devolved into a period marked by systemic oppression and a devastating civil war that raged throughout the late 20th century. In response to this turmoil and the subsequent marginalization of its people, Somaliland declared its independence in 1991.

This perspective is enriched by the argument that Somaliland had formed its political identity long before the amalgamation with Somalia.

In summary, the stark contrast between Somaliland’s impressive progress and Somalia’s ongoing crises creates a compelling narrative advocating for Somaliland’s rightful claim to sovereignty and its urgent appeal for global recognition. This narrative is further embellished by Somaliland’s significant achievements in governance, economic development, and social stability, which stand in sharp relief to Somalia’s continued struggles. The vibrant tapestry of Somaliland’s successes and aspirations vividly illustrates a region that is not only striving for acknowledgment but is also eager to contribute as a legitimate and responsible actor within the larger international community and horn of Africa.
