As Somalilanders head to the polls on November 13th 2024 to choose their next president, these elections represent a critical juncture for strengthening the Somaliland’s democratic progress and governance standards.

Three decades since Somaliland unilaterally declared independence from Somalia and successfully established stable, homegrown institutions of government, the electorate now faces a choice with momentous implications. On the one hand are candidates pledging continuity of Somaliland’s hard-won stability and development gains.

Among our top priorities for Somaliland’s civil society and citizens is safeguarding the independence and integrity of its electoral process. Local election monitors have deployed nationwide to document voting procedures and any irregularities, with the goal of ensuring results are fully credible and accepted by all parties. The Nation’s Electoral Commission (NEC) transparency and impartial oversight will be vital to maintaining public trust in Somaliland’s political system.

Somaliland’s independent media and active coalition of civil society will continue to train citizen journalists to maintain ethical standards while closely monitoring media for electoral integrity. Through civic education campaigns and nonviolent mobilization where needed, these stakeholders will hold leaders accountable to their reform pledges.

With youth forming the majority, Somaliland’s future depends on inclusive policies that create jobs and opportunities. Candidates emphasizing transparent, participatory leadership; good governance; and an enabling environment for the private sector to invest appear best placed to meet citizen’s high expectations and safeguard stability for generations to come.

The eyes of the international community are also on these elections as a barometer of Somaliland’s democratic resilience and capacity for stable self-governance – key factors that strengthen its call for long-due recognition as an independent state. A credible, peaceful process that reflects the people’s will could boost Somaliland’s case on the global stage, which we all expect to witness and celebrate the recognition soon.

Finally I am urging to all political parties and political elites to respect the rule of law, campaign with the boundaries of our constitution and encouraging national unity.
