Somalia should adopt a ten-year UN trusteeship to ensure stability and state rebuilding.

Somalia currently lacks a cohesive and functional government, with federal states operating independently of the central authority in Villa Somalia. This fragmentation has resulted in a situation where no state is effectively under the jurisdiction of the Villa Somalia regime. The nation is fraught with internal conflict, primarily driven by former leaders and politicians who oppose the current administration under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, which many perceive as ineffective and failing.
The security landscape is dire, as Al-Shabaab militants have escalated their attacks on Villa Somalia’s armed forces, further destabilising the region. Amid this turmoil, the so-called Parliament is mired in disarray, with a significant portion of its members reportedly engaged in corrupt practices and serving the interests of powerful factions rather than the public.
The Villa Somalia regime, often described as a mafia-like entity, is accused of selling public land and assets for personal gain, prioritizing its interests over the welfare of the nation. Meanwhile, President Hassan Sheikh is frequently seen travelling across the country and seeking international funding for various projects, a move that raises questions about the accountability and effectiveness of those initiatives.
In recent months, the Villa-Somalia government has noticeably intensified its campaign against Somaliland’s statehood across various social media platforms. It has engaged an international lobbying group in the USA for this project. This strategy is calculated to divert public attention from the pressing internal challenges it faces, including economic turmoil and political instability. As tensions escalate, the administration at Villa Somalia appears increasingly desperate, employing tactics to undermine Somaliland’s persistent quest for international recognition and its efforts to sustain a stable political environment.
Amidst these developments, the international community has shown growing impatience with the ongoing political turmoil in Mogadishu, contrasting sharply with Somaliland’s successful track record of democratic governance and stability. This divergence in fortunes has also drawn global attention to Somaliland, highlighting its relatively peaceful and orderly society. The contrast between the two countries underscores the complexities of Somali politics and the broader implications for regional stability as Somaliland strives for acknowledgement on the world stage.
In 2025, the international community deployed 11,500 peacekeeping soldiers to support the fragile Villa-Somalia administration, replacing the ATMIS mission to avert its potential collapse. However, a pressing concern looms over the sustainability of this peacekeeping effort and the global community’s commitment to maintaining stability in such a profoundly fragmented and failed state.
Experts suggest a decade-long UN trusteeship could be the country’s ( Somalia) most viable solution for establishing lasting peace and governance. This approach would enable the development of a functional and inclusive government based on the collaboration of the various clans rather than their entrenched rivalries. By prioritising the creation of institutions that reflect the diverse interests of the populace, the international community could assist in laying the groundwork for enduring peace and stability.
