Reaffirmation of Somaliland’s Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity
#Araweelo _News _Network
Introduction
The Government of Somaliland unequivocally reaffirms its sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity in light of recent developments surrounding the failed Ankara communique between Somalia and Ethiopia. This statement addresses any misconceptions or potential agreements that may challenge Somaliland’s rightful jurisdiction, particularly regarding its Red Sea coast.
Somaliland’s Sovereignty is Non-Negotiable
Since reclaiming its independence in 1991, Somaliland has operated as a stable, self-governing, and democratic state. Our sovereignty over all territories within our internationally recognized borders, including the Red Sea coast, is a cornerstone of our existence and cannot be altered by external agreements to which Somaliland is not a party.
Any agreement between Ethiopia and Somalia purporting to grant Ethiopia access to Somaliland’s Red Sea coast without our explicit consent is null and void. Such actions directly contravene international principles of sovereignty and self-determination, which Somaliland has diligently upheld for over three decades.
Concerns with the Ankara Communique
The discussions hosted in Ankara between Somalia and Ethiopia have raised serious concerns due to the potential inclusion of Somaliland’s territories in their negotiations. Somaliland categorically rejects any outcomes or understandings from these discussions that attempt to undermine our sovereignty.
It is deeply concerning that Somalia persists in ignoring the established reality of Somaliland’s statehood and independence. This ongoing disregard is especially evident in Somalia’s attempts to incorporate Somaliland’s territory into discussions with external parties. Such actions not only undermine Somaliland’s sovereignty but also complicate regional stability.
Ethiopia, as a neighbouring state and a crucial strategic partner to both Somalia and Somaliland, has a unique and significant role in this context. It is essential for Ethiopia to fully acknowledge the legal and moral considerations surrounding its engagement with Somalia in negotiations that involve Somaliland. Somaliland is the only entity with legitimate claims to jurisdiction over its territory, making any involvement from Villa Somalia—Somalia’s federal government—essentially a façade. This situation highlights the need for a clear understanding and respect for Somaliland’s position in any diplomatic discussions, as failing to do so could lead to further complications in the region’s political landscape.
Call to Ethiopia
Somaliland values its longstanding relationship with Ethiopia, built on mutual respect and cooperation. However, any engagement by Ethiopia in agreements undermining Somaliland’s territorial integrity would jeopardize this partnership. We urge Ethiopia to:
- Respect Somaliland’s sovereignty and territorial boundaries.
- Engage directly with Somaliland on matters of mutual interest, including access to the Red Sea and economic collaboration.
- Avoid aligning with failed state of Somalia’s unfounded claims, which threaten regional stability.
International Law and Regional Stability
Under international law, Somaliland’s territorial integrity is protected, and any attempt to contravene this principle undermines not only Somaliland but also the broader stability of the Horn of Africa. The international community must remain vigilant against actions that could provoke unnecessary conflict and destabilize a region already fraught with challenges.
Strategic Importance of Berbera Port
The Berbera port, under Somaliland’s full jurisdiction, is a vital economic and strategic asset. Somaliland welcomes partnerships that respect its sovereignty and contribute to regional economic growth. Ethiopia’s access to the Red Sea must be pursued through legitimate agreements with Somaliland, not through illegitimate arrangements with Somalia.
Commitment to Dialogue and Cooperation
Somaliland remains committed to dialogue, mutual respect, and cooperation with all neighbours and international partners. We stand ready to engage with Ethiopia and other stakeholders to foster stability and economic prosperity while safeguarding our national interests.
Conclusion
Somaliland will continue to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity against any attempts to undermine them. We call on the international community, including Ethiopia, to respect Somaliland’s independence and work constructively towards shared regional goals.
