#HargeisaAirport
Hargeisa is home to an international airport that, while operational, is considerably smaller and more outdated than the major international airports in neighbouring countries like Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya. This discrepancy raises critical concerns about how our nation is perceived globally, as our current facilities do not meet international standards.
In 2012, a group of engineers from Somaliland, now residing in the UK, put forward a comprehensive proposal to upgrade the airport. After conducting an in-depth assessment of the existing infrastructure, they estimated that an investment of approximately five million USD would be required to construct a modern, high-quality terminal with all the necessary administrative offices and passenger amenities.
Considering this project’s relatively modest cost, I am optimistic that the young and dynamic Minister of Aviation, Mr. Fuad, and his active Deputy Minister, Mr.Kayse, will actively pursue funding opportunities to realize this vital infrastructure enhancement. Such an upgrade would improve passengers’ travel experience and significantly elevate Somaliland’s standing in the eyes of international travellers and investors, fostering greater connectivity and economic growth.
Improving our main gateway to Somaliland is crucial for our progress. The current terminal is inadequate in accommodating the rising demands of modern air travel and representing our nation’s deep history and immense potential. A new terminal would significantly enhance the travel experience for international visitors, offering them a warm and welcoming introduction to Somaliland while showcasing our unique cultural heritage.
Furthermore, this new facility would serve as a powerful symbol of Somaliland’s global growth and development ambitions. It would reflect our commitment to modernity and innovation, presenting a forward-thinking image. Investing in this upgrade is not merely about infrastructure; it is an investment in our identity and a testament to our aspirations. Enhancing our airport facilities can pave the way for increased tourism, strengthen trade connections, and promote international partnerships, ultimately driving economic growth and prosperity for our communities. It is time for us to embrace this opportunity and build a terminal that mirrors our nation’s dynamic and progressive spirit.
The newly appointed ministry must prioritize the presentation of the comprehensive airport development plan within its initial 100-day work agenda. This strategic inclusion is crucial for laying the groundwork for significant infrastructure improvements. Fortunately, we are fortunate to have one of the most accomplished architectural engineers in our country, renowned for their innovative designs and visionary concepts. Their expertise will be instrumental in creating a state-of-the-art airport terminal that meets modern standards and enhances the overall travel experience for passengers, making it a cornerstone of our commitment to progress and excellence in transportation.
