Houses near Hoo Marina were evacuated after the blaze on Vicarage Lane, with reports of an initial explosion from eyewitnesses.
Mobile phone footage showed a huge cloud of black smoke rising from the blaze and a second explosion erupting as the fire was burning.
Eyewitnesses told local media a chemical facility is based at the industrial unit, but there was no official confirmation that was the source of the blaze.
Kent’s fire service said around 200 people were removed from the area.
Power supplies in the surrounding area have been severely disrupted, with the fire reported to have affected nearby power lines.
