Nairobi Kenya (ANN)-Washington warned of an increased security threat in Somalia.
The US Embassy in Nairobi has issued a high alert regarding security threats in Mogadishu to its citizens.
According to statement from the US Embassy in Nairobi. said “US Embessy in Nairobi has high alert to American Citizanis to Mogadishu Somalia.
The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi has received information about threats to multiple locations in Mogadishu, including Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu. All movements of U.S. Embassy personnel have been canceled for Tuesday, April 9, 2024.
The U.S. Department of State level-four travel advisory (“do not travel”) for Somalia remains in effect due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, health issues, kidnapping, and piracy.
The U.S. Embassy in Somalia reminds U.S. citizens that terrorists continue to plot kidnappings, bombings, and other attacks in Somalia. They may conduct attacks with little or no warning, targeting airports and seaports, checkpoints, government buildings, hotels, restaurants, shopping areas, and other areas where large crowds gather and Westerners frequent, as well as government, military, and Western convoys.
Methods of attack include, but are not limited to, car bombs, suicide bombers, individual attackers, and mortar fire.
The Department of State has issued a Level 4 Travel Advisory for Somalia and advises U.S. citizens not to travel to Somalia due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, health issues, kidnapping, and piracy.
The U.S. government has extremely limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Somalia due to the lack of a permanent consular presence in Somalia.
The warning from the United States came at a time when the security situation in Mogadishu is deteriorating, and attacks, explosions and other insecure situations can be expected at any time from Al-Shabaab and other groups that can easily commit criminal acts against of security.
Also, the political tensions in the region between the Federal Government of Somalia and the Federal Government of Ethiopia have created fears that the security situation in the region will worsen.
