“The world is bigger than five,” say Turkish President.
Moscow(ANN)-Russian President Vladimir Putin has acknowledged the grievances of many countries around the world over the structure of the United Nations and the need to change the powers of the five-vote bloc, which is called the UN Security Council, including Russia.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is campaigning for a plan to change the structure of the United Nations and the five countries – Russia, the United States, China, France and the United Kingdom – are the only five with the power to veto.
Erdogan, spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who welcomed the decision, saying it was “necessary” at the moment.
President Putin noted that Turkey has the right to be a member of the Security Council, as the five countries with a veto power are not members of an Islamic country.
Also, the President of Turkey, told to the President of Russia according to Mr. Putin said only five countries could not represent the world, pointing out that Islamic countries were absent from the United Nations and had no influence on Security Council resolutions.
“Something needs to be done to make the UN Security Council more balanced,” Middleeastmonitor, was quoted as saying by Anadolu Agency.
Speaking at a meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi on Thursday, President Putin said that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was right to make the proposal.
“We need to think about how to balance the United Nations (UN), especially since, indeed, President Erdogan is right.”
The United Nations was established in the aftermath of World War II, and there was unbalance. In some respects, things are changing now. It has already changed, ” he said.
Erdogan, encouraged his reform of the United Nations with a slogan, “the world is bigger than five,” arguing that the five-member Security Council structure is unrepresentative, In the world, especially in developing and Muslim Countries.
Putin added that he raised the issue on his own during a recent meeting with the Turkish president in Russia.
“It’ is clear why the Turkish leader is talking about this. Apparently, he believes that Turkey can be a permanent member of the Security Council. But we are not alone, and it is not up to Russia to decide for ourselves.
“I then told Mr. “Erdogan, if we violate the right to veto permanent membership, the UN will die and on the same day it will be transformed into the League of Nations, the only forum for dialogue,” Putin said.
“We do not want to undermine the very foundations of the United Nations,” Putin said, adding that the right to veto was a “fundamental right” of the United Nations today.
President Putin, however, said the Turkish president agreed on the need to keep the organization “balanced,” to show China’s economic power over the United States in terms of purchasing power, rapid growth of the Indian economy, and changes in Africa and Latin America.
“All of this must be taken into account, and we must not make mistakes in this matter,” Putin said.
What is the Security Council’s structure?
The Security Council has five permanent members: China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The five countries are collectively known as the P5, and have the power to oppose any resolution submitted to the Security Council without their consent.
Also, there are ten countries that elect members of the UN General Assembly, but those who serve for two years do not have a permanent term, and are not afforded veto power, but they only bear witness to the decisions made by these five countries.
