Addis Ababa(ANN)- The United Nations has reacted strongly to the Ethiopian government’s expulsion of seven UN staff members, ordering them to leave the country within the next 72 hours.
A statement from the Ethiopian government said the sacked aid workers had been accused of interfering in the country’s internal affairs, according to an official statement from Prime Minister Abi Ahmed’s government.
However, the United Nations has reacted strongly to the Ethiopian government’s decision.
A statement from the UN Office for the said it was shocked by the move, which did not comply with international law.
“UN was shocked by the information that the Government of Ethiopia has declared seven UN officials, including senior UN humanitarian officials, as persona non grata, said the statement.
All UN humanitarian operations are guided by the core principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, and independence, added the statement.
“The UN is committed to helping Ethiopian people who rely on humanitarian assistance. We are now engaging with the Government of Ethiopia in the expectation that the concerned UN staff will be allowed to continue their important work.” said a statement from the UN Secretary General’s Office.
