Washington(ANN)-The United States House of Representatives have decided to hold a vote on a resolution to block President Donald Trump’s declaration of a national emergency.
Trump declared a national emergency this month to help get funding from Congress to build a controversial security wall on the border with Mexico.
The controversial border wall along the US-Mexico border is seen as Trump’s favorite project.
Opposition lawmakers say Trump’s emergency declaration is unconstitutional.
House representatives opposed to Trump’s costly wall intend to use a provision from the National Emergencies Act to try to terminate the declaration on Tuesday.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who is viewed as the leader of opposition to Trump’s policies, said after Trump’s declaration that she would block the national emergency declaration.
Pelosi insisted that lawmakers needed “to defend our democracy”, and expressed hope that Republicans would join Democrats in the efforts to stop the unconstitutional national emergency declaration.
“If the president is successful in getting his way on this, rest assured he will come back, he will try this again, probably on other issues as will future presidents. The Congress must step up,” said Rep. Joaquin Castro, the Texas Democrat leading the effort.
Experts say if Congress is unable to halt the national emergency through the legislative process, lawmakers could still file lawsuits, a move that the opposition has not ruled out.
